Practical Info

About Lisbon

Lisbon, the city of the seven hills, is one of the oldest cities in the world. Lisbon had different names over the centuries like Luxbona, Lixbuna or Ulixbone (hence the LX shorthand still used today).

Walking is the best way to wander around the city, cross its narrow streets, enjoy the views on the top of its hills and mingle with the locals.

For longer distances, public transportation is fast and cheap. And you can't miss the chance to ride in one of the famous yellow trams.

Transportation

Metro and Bus

The fastest way to roam about the city is to get a ticket on the subway. It's also valid for buses and you can even hop-on and off with the same ticket for one hour.

Each ticket is €1,50 or you can get an unlimited daily ticket for €6,40.

Uber/Taxi

Taxis are fairly cheap and will get you around the city for around €5 to €10 a ride.

Please be aware that they can charge you extra for carrying big luggage or if you called them on the phone (+351 218119000). You can waive those fees by using the FreeNow app.

There are also other transportation services like Uber and Bolt.

Train

Lisbon’s commuter train system is useful if you’re considering a day trip to the picturesque town of Sintra or the coastline town of Cascais. The trip takes about 40-45 minutes.

Bikes and Electric Scooters

Several scooter-sharing companies operate in the city. You can use Lime, Bolt, Cooltra or FreeNow. Bike sharing (including electric bikes) is also available through Gira stations.

Sightseeing

If you're planning to see some museums and other attractions, then your best option is to get a Lisboa Card, which not only includes city-wide transportation but also free admission to 26 museums and monuments, plus other deals and discounts.

They cost €20 for 24h, €34 for 48h and €42 for 72h. You can even buy them online.

If you are a fan of Hop On Hop Off service, you can get a ride from double decker buses from Yellow Bus or Cityrama for about €25 per day.
